From Odd Jobs to Neighbourhood Champions: How Young Friends Grew a Student Movement Rooted in Care, Community, and Greener Futures

Rising from Uncertainty

Like many heroes, our story began during a time of challenge. In 2021, three friends from Edmonton—Nick, Cole, and Ransford ("Randy")—were suddenly out of work due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With bills mounting and government support uncertain, they knew they couldn’t just sit on the sidelines. Instead, they chose to step up for their neighbours.

“Saving the Community One Family at a Time”

Driven by a desire to help, the friends launched “The Neighbourhood Heroes,” offering any odd job their neighbours needed. From heavy lifting to handy fixes, no task was too small when it benefited the community. Their first slogan—“Saving the community one family at a time”—reflected their commitment to tackling real problems, one household at a time.

Discovering a Passion for Green Spaces

As time passed, it became clear there was something special about transforming yards and gardens. The team focused their efforts on lawn care and landscaping, recognizing the importance of green spaces to neighbourhood pride and well-being. With this new focus, they learned the industry inside and out, obtained all necessary licences, and dove deep into effective, sustainable methods and products. Their updated slogan—“The Grass is Greener on Your Side”—captured their promise to deliver next-level lawn care to every neighbour.

Growth, Empowerment, and Impact

In just four years, Neighbourhood Heroes has transformed more than 2,000 lawns in and around Edmonton, providing meaningful jobs to students and young adults along the way. What began as three friends with a vision quickly became a launchpad for new talent. Today, the core team includes Rowland—a computer science student who earned an ownership stake—and Kobe, a studied and certified engineer working towards the same. Many other student team members have contributed, learned, and built their skills before moving on to bright futures.

Our work is about more than just lawns; it’s about creating opportunities, building community, and supporting the next generation. We are committed to leaving every neighbourhood cleaner, greener, and stronger than we found it—one hero, one lawn, and one caring act at a time.

Our journey continues, and every season brings new chances to beautify neighbourhoods, support students, and inspire future leaders. That’s what being a Neighbourhood Hero is all about.
