Seeding

Overseeding for a Lush, Resilient Lawn

At Neighbourhood Heroes, we know that every thriving Alberta lawn starts with healthy, resilient grass. Our Seeding program is designed to restore, thicken, and revitalize lawns—even those that suffer from bare patches. Whether you want to boost a thinning yard or reclaim areas of damaged grass, overseeding is at the heart of what we do, and we’re here to help you get it done right, neighbour.

What Is Overseeding—and Why Do We Need It?

Overseeding is the process of sowing new grass seed over existing turf. This method is especially effective for thickening lawns, filling in thin or patchy areas, and promoting a rich, vibrant appearance without the need for a complete lawn replacement. In our experience, overseeding consistently delivers the best results for Alberta lawns, helping to create a healthy, robust turf that stands up to our tough winters and unpredictable summers.

Bare Patches: Need a Specific Area Done?

At Neighbourhood Heroes, we want to ensure your needs are met right down to the last square foot. If there’s a specific part of your lawn that needs focused care, just mark it with flags or any visible item before your scheduled visit. This allows our Heroes to be precise on arrival, ensuring targeted overseeding exactly where it’s needed most.

High-Quality Spreaders: Even, Accurate Application

We use a combination of hand-held and push-type seed spreaders, allowing us to adapt to lawns of every size and shape. These tools enable us to distribute grass seed evenly, promoting consistent growth and preventing crowding or thin spots. Special care is always taken to keep seeds out of garden beds, planters, and any place they’re not wanted, so you won’t have to worry about grass growing where it shouldn’t.

Our Alberta Specific Seed Mix

Alberta’s climate is unique, with long winters and variable precipitation. That’s why our seed blend features Kentucky Bluegrass, fescues, and ryegrass—all selected for their hardiness, vibrancy, and adaptability to local conditions.

Kentucky Bluegrass

offers dense coverage and a classic look, thriving in cooler climates.

Tall Fescues

provide excellent drought resistance and are tolerant of shade, helping fill in tricky areas.

Ryegrass

germinates quickly and adds early colour and stability as your new grass takes root.

While our exact mix ratio remains our secret recipe, rest assured every seed is chosen for a specific advantage, aiming for lush, durable turf season after season.

The Importance Of Watering: Helping Your Seeds Succeed

Proper watering is crucial for successful overseeding. Here’s our tried-and-true watering schedule:

Immediately after seeding

Give your entire lawn a thorough soaking for about one hour to help seeds make contact with the soil.

For Bare Areas or New Seeds

For seeds that haven’t yet sprouted, water daily for about two weeks to keep the soil consistently moist. Once you notice germination (the new grass peeking through), shift to a weekly deep watering schedule. Consistent moisture early on is the best start you can give your future lawn.

After 7 days

Repeat deep watering sessions weekly.

Using Topsoil

We don’t offer topsoiling services, but if you find certain patches struggle to grow grass, adding a thin layer of quality topsoil after planting can work wonders. Topsoil protects seeds from wildlife and wind, keeps them cool and moist, and improves your chances of successful germination. It’s an optional step that’s worth considering for especially troubled areas.

Weeds Sprouting: Why You May See Baby Weeds (And What to Do)

It’s common for some baby weeds to emerge after seeding. That’s because the open, nutrient-rich environment is just as attractive to stray weed seeds as to your new grass. We never use weed seeds in our products, ever. The best way to manage these early weeds is simple: hand-pick them as soon as they sprout. This keeps the competition low for your grass to establish itself without unwanted interference.

Aeration and Overseeding: The Perfect Pair

Neighbours often ask about aerating and how it fits with seeding. In Alberta, where heavy snow compacts the soil each winter, we recommend aeration at least once a year—typically in the spring. Aerating loosens up compacted soil, allowing water, oxygen, and nutrients to reach the roots. Pairing overseeding with post-aeration maximizes root development, helping your new grass thrive. Our pro-tip: book an aeration along with your seeding to boost your lawn’s strength and resilience for the upcoming season.

Why Choose Seeding and Aeration Together?

A consistent annual pairing of aeration and overseeding breathes new life into your lawn. You’ll enjoy a thicker, healthier turf that recovers faster from weather stress and resists weed invasions—along with the pride of a yard that’s truly the envy of the neighbourhood.
