Electric Vs Gas (Diesel) Fleets

A Deep Dive Into Electric vs. Diesel Service Fleets

Neighbourhood Heroes isn’t just leading the way in electric lawn care—we’re also proud to be the first company in Canada to tranistion to operating a full Tesla electric vehicle (EV) service fleet. While others rely on dirty, outdated diesel trucks and vans, our commitment to sustainability extends to every ride to your driveway.

Let’s break down why our zero-emission Tesla fleet is the smarter, cleaner, and far more responsible choice for Alberta—and for our planet.

Manufacturing Emissions: Batteries vs. Engines

Tesla EVs

Yes, building a Tesla creates more greenhouse gas emissions up front (mainly from mining and manufacturing the advanced battery pack).  However, Tesla is actively reducing this “carbon debt” by powering its Gigafactories with renewable energy and continuously improving battery efficiency.

Gas/Diesel vehicles:

Diesel trucks start with a lower carbon footprint at the factory stage. But that’s where their environmental story ends—things only get worse the moment they hit the road.

Lifetime Emissions: The Real Difference

The way a vehicle is powered matters most across its whole lifespan.

Diesel vehicles

Emit carbon dioxide (CO₂), nitrogen oxides, and particulates every single kilometre.

The use phase is responsible for about 73% of a diesel’s total life cycle emissions.

You can’t drive a diesel or gas without polluting the air—no exceptions.

Tesla fleet

Produces ZERO tailpipe emissions, no matter how far or how often we drive.

Our emissions during the “use phase” are tied to the local electricity grid. Here in Alberta, the grid is getting cleaner every year—and so are our operations.

With renewable electricity, the real-world environmental advantage of Tesla EVs only gets stronger.

The Carbon Payback Period: How EVs Get Greener Every Year

Because Tesla’s upfront emissions are paid back quickly, every year of service means lower total GHG output compared to diesel.

  • On average, a Tesla hits its “carbon break-even” point in about three years. With our charging system, maintenace and operation milage, our payback period is cut down to just about 10 months.
  • After that, life cycle assessments (LCA) show Tesla vehicles produce anywhere from 25% to more than 70% *less* CO₂ than a comparable diesel vehicle.

Net Environmental Impact (NEI): The Numbers Speak for Themselves

Zero tailpipe emissions

No CO₂, nitrogen oxides, soot, sulphur, or particulate matter at your curb or in your neighbourhood.

Cleaner as you drive

The more Alberta’s grid relies on wind, solar, and hydro, the cleaner our fleet becomes—unlike dirty diesels, which will never get better.

Global perspective

Tesla’s 2023 Impact Report calculated over 20 million metric tons of GHG emissions avoided worldwide by Tesla drivers compared to conventional vehicles.

Diesel’s disadvantage

Every kilometre driven in a diesel truck means more air pollution, more greenhouse gases, and more harm to community health.

Sustainable Charging: A Future-Proof Investment

Tesla’s focus on battery recycling and clean manufacturing means today’s EVs will become even more sustainable over time.

At Neighbourhood Heroes, our vehicles charge on renewable electricity, using Tesla's smart charging to charge at the most optimal time for the city's power grid.

Why Diesel Fleets Fall Behind

No matter how efficient or “modern” a diesel engine claims to be, it can’t match the environmental advantage of a Tesla EV. The tailpipe is always pumping out pollution.

As governments raise the bar on air quality and carbon emissions, diesel fleets will only get more out of date and more expensive to operate.
